Children's Hospital

Busy Day today. I had to work at MissFits from 8-11 and then rushed home to get lunch and Jakob for his appointment at Children's Hospital. We had taken Jakob in a couple weeks ago to our normal family physician for problems with his belly button. She felt that his belly button never fully closed, and so had an umbilical hernia and referred us to a surgeon at Children's hospital. I decided to not get myself all worked up and worried and only tell a handful of people so that I didn't hear all of the thoughts and opinions of everyone else and work myself into a scare. I just told myself, "It's just an umbilical hernia...nothing serious...can't be that complicated...we'll go in, they will set up the surgery, they will close him up and everything will be super duper. :)
The website for the Hospital informed me that there was construction going on around the hospital so be prepared to be 15-30 minutes early. The appointment was at 2, I thought I should probably leave around noon...which, in my 'always late' mind really means like 12:30. I think I left at 12:15 ish. We got to Children's around 1:30...perfect. I had plenty of time which was mainly what I was stressing about on the way down anyway. Jakob slept on the way down so I found a spot in the parking structure as close as I could get to the 2nd floor walkway to the clinic. I woke up Jake and he was still groggy and whiny and tired and probably a bit scared even though he really didn't know what was happening besides he was going to the doctor to get his belly button looked at. I ended up having to carry Jakob almost the entire way to the clinic...only setting him down twice. Jakob was quiet and stuck close once we were in the clinic. We got called into the back about 2:15 just after I heard them announce in the waiting room that anyone waiting for this particular DR, "We are very sorry, but she is running behind." The med student came in to ask all of the typical questions...about 10-15 minutes after we wee in there....and then about an hour later...oh, and two or three trips OUT of the room to take the 3 year old to the bathroom!...we finally saw the DR! She started it out by giving the boy a sucker. :) Then She checked his belly button while he was sitting next to me...then laying on the table...Dr: "When did you first notice something was possibly wrong?" Me: "Oh, since birth."....More pushing in the poor kids button...Dr. "HE is doing SUCH a great job!"
"Did you notice anything out of the ordinary when he lost his umbilical cord?" Me: "Um, hmmm, no, I don't think so." Now she does more pushing and poking as Jakob stands on the table...so his belly button is at our eye level. Dr: "Well, I'm sorry to tell you this (jokingly) but Jakob doesn't have an umbilical hernia...he won't have to have surgery." So, inside, I'm like, "Woohoo! No surgery for my poor lil man" And then, I'm thinking "Well, now wait...then what the heck is wrong with his button? The Doctor has now referred me to a dermatologist because he does have an obvious problem with the skin by his belly button. Sooooo, now, it is the fear of the unknown.
On the way home, I stopped at Dairy Queen because he was such a trooper. The kid declined ice cream to get fries instead!!
By the time we got home, it was after 5. Lee has a delicious dinner waiting for us at home. He has been such an awesome dad and husband these last couple of days. I am thankful for the help he has been giving, the dinners he has been making, and he has been working so hard and so many days just to try to keep things afloat here at home. Times are tough for so many people right now...including us. I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how to best help out our family. But that, is a whole new story...
